Molly Burt-Westvig was born in Redondo Beach, California, to two potters. Shortly after her family moved to Iowa City, Iowa. Being brought up by two artists a great interest and love of the arts was instilled in her from a very young age.

She took art courses all through out her schooling and by the end of her junior year of high school she had taken every available art course offered. She turned to creating her own courses via independent studies, reading books about famous architects and artists, using these books to teach herself more complex ideas than offered at a high school level. This intellectual curiosity lead to a high level of maturity, forming a work ethic and attention to detail that few people her age possess. Her work evokes a certain feeling of dream-like realism, frequently drawing from stories of folklore. Her use of highly saturated colors in unexpected combinations weaves new narratives within her artwork, often blurring the line between reality and dream.

Being brought up by two ceramicists taught her that functional art should be valued for its practicality. A great deal of her sculptural work serves a purpose beyond aesthetics, as homage to that upbringing.

Molly is currently working towards her bachelor's degree of fine arts at the University of Iowa after spending a year receiving a foundation art education at the Kansas City Art Institute, she plans to continue her education and attend graduate school after her time at the University of Iowa.
